China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies. It is a state holding company whose business operations cover a broad spectrum of upstream and downstream activities, domestic marketing and international trade, technical services, and equipment manufacturing and supply.

CNPC serves as China 's largest producer and supplier of crude oil and natural gas, holding a dominant position in domestic petroleum production, processing, and marketing sectors. At the same time, CNPC is also a major producer and supplier of refined oil products and petrochemicals. As one of the largest service suppliers in the global petroleum and petrochemical industries, CNPC can provide operational services and technical support in such areas as geophysical prospecting, well drilling, logging, well testing, downhole operations, oilfield surface facilities construction, pipeline construction, refining and petrochemical projects, and manufacturing and supply of petroleum equipment.

CNPC ranked tenth among the world's top 50 petroleum companies by U.S. Petroleum Intelligence Weekly in 2001, based on indices of oil and gas reserves, production, crude processing capacity, and sales of refined oil products. In 2003, the company rated 52nd by the Fortune Global 500 in terms of sales revenues, instead of the 69th in 2002.

CNPC's registered total assets is 114.9 billion yuan, and its present total assets is 736.2 billion yuan. It has 13 large and giant oil and gas field enterprises, 16 large scale refining and petrochemical companies, 19 marketing companies and a large group of R&D units and technical service and mechanical manufacturing enterprise located in Northeast China , North China , Northwest China and Southwest China . CNPC has nearly 30 oil and gas exploration, development and production projects in the Middle East , North Africa , Middle Asia, Russia , and South America .

In 2003, CNPC's annual crude oil production totaled 122.428 million tons, 4.857 million tons more than in 2002. Annual natural gas production totaled 26.27 billion cubic meters, 2.99 billion cubic meters more than in 2002. A total of 100.938 million tons of crude oil was processed, 9.7% more than in 2002. Annual sales revenue totaled 475.29 billion yuan, generating 76 billion yuan in taxes and total profits in excess of 72.5 billion yuan, the highest among Chinese domestic enterprises.

PetroChina Co. Ltd., CNPC's largest listed subsidiary, is responsible for CNPC's domestic operations in the areas of oil and gas exploration and development, oil refining and petrochemical production, marketing, pipeline transportation, and natural gas sales and utilization. PetroChina was publicly listed respectively in Hong Kong and US New York in April 2000, with CNPC holding 90% of its shares.

After nearly 50 years' accumulative development, CNPC has successfully established one competitive production and construction workforce with advanced techniques and technologies, and rich experience specialized in different sectors, possessing overall technical forces and advantages to bid all sorts of field and technical service projects, both domestic and overseas.

With people as its most important resource, CNPC will continue to strengthen its core business operations, open new domestic and overseas markets, expand international petroleum trading activities, actively adjust its organizational structure, and pursue greater economic returns. CNPC will speedup its dual transformation process from a domestic oil company to a multinational one, and from a pure oil and gas producer to an integrated oil and gas supplier, making unremitting efforts to build a global competitive multinational corporation.
